Bangladesh Minority Watch (BDMW) has condemned the brutal and inhuman torture of Tapan Das, a resident of Bhandarbari in Sukhair village, Dharmapasha Upazila, Sunamganj district. The incident occurred on August 12, 2022, at 12:00 PM, when Md. Babul Mia, Helal Mia, and their accomplices allegedly abducted and tied Tapan Das to a tree before assaulting him.
Details of the Incident
The incident unfolded after Tapan Das, a poor fisherman, had his fishing net stolen by Md. Babul Mia's associates. When Tapan Das went to inquire about the theft, he was forcefully tied to a tree by Babul Mia's group. They repeatedly punched and kicked him, causing severe bruising all over his body. The assailants also threatened him and warned him and his family to leave the area immediately.
Bangladesh Minority Watch learned that the minority community in the area is living in fear and insecurity following this heinous event and is demanding justice for the victim.
Official Response and BDMW's Stand
When contacted by Bangladesh Minority Watch, Mohammad Suman Mia, the Additional Superintendent of Police of Sunamganj district (01320120703), confirmed that a case had been filed against the accused but that the police had not yet been able to arrest them. He assured that the police were actively trying to apprehend the culprits.
The Officer-in-Charge of the police station stated that he was too busy to provide any information. Attempts to contact the victim, Tapan Das (01779501908), were unsuccessful. Assistant Superintendent of Police Ali Farid Ahmed informed Bangladesh Minority Watch that the case report had not yet been sent to the court, making it impossible to provide a copy.
Bangladesh Minority Watch has strongly condemned this disgraceful act and demanded that a fair investigation be conducted and that the perpetrators be brought to justice under the law.
