Family Turns to Bangladesh Minority Watch After Abduction of Swapna Rani Modak (14) in Thakurgaon

A 14-year-old Hindu girl and sixth-grade student, Swapna Rani Modak, was abducted on November 7, 2021, at around 7:00 PM from the Madarganj area of Thakurgaon. The alleged purpose of the abduction was to forcibly convert her to Islam. The accused are Mohammad Abu Sayed (18), Mohammad Nur Islam (40), Mohammad Amin (40), and Mohammad Amir (35)

The girl's father filed a case at the Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station with the assistance of Sri Gourahari Barman, the Thakurgaon district representative for Bangladesh Minority Watch (BDMW). The case was registered as Case No. 11/335 on November 10, 2021, under Section 7/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. However, police have so far been unable to rescue the girl.

A Father's Plea

The girl’s father, Sri Rajen Modak, recounted the incident: "On Sunday, November 7, 2021, at approximately 7:00 PM, my minor daughter, Swapna Rani Modak, was alone near our house on the Madarganj port road. As per a pre-planned conspiracy, the primary accused, along with an unidentified young man around 21/22 years old, arrived in an auto-rickshaw. At gunpoint, they held my minor daughter hostage and forcefully put her into the auto-rickshaw against her will. The accused then quickly fled north along the main road. I could not save my daughter."

Sri Gourahari Barman has been continuously working to rescue the girl, informing the police and various administrative officials. Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, on behalf of BDMW, has also contacted the Officer-in-Charge of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur, and the Superintendent of Police of Thakurgaon to press for action.

BDMW Demands Justice

Bangladesh Minority Watch has vehemently condemned this heinous incident. The organization is demanding the immediate rescue of the girl and the arrest and prosecution of the culprits. They have also pointed out that under the law, the marriage of a minor has no legal basis.
