In Dinajpur, a Hindu youth was beaten up after a rumor of religious blasphemy was spread. Police later arrested the Hindu youth.

Shree Shawon Roy, son of Shree Madhab Roy from Kumar Para, Sujalpur in Birganj Upazila, Dinajpur District, was arrested and sent to jail by the Birganj Police Station's Officer-in-Charge on May 30, 2024. A case was filed against him by Md. Motasim Billah under Sections 27, 28, 29, and 31 of the Cyber Security Act.
In his complaint, Md. Motasim Billah alleged that Shawon Roy posted defamatory and religiously offensive content on Facebook, which incited violence and disrupted communal harmony. As a result, local extremists physically assaulted him and paraded him with a garland of shoes around his neck.
On Saturday, June 15, 2024, Advocate Rabindra Ghosh and human rights activist Goura Hari, representing the Bangladesh Minority Watch, visited the Birganj Police Station and the site of the incident.
Upon questioning Shawon Roy's parents, they claimed that their son had not committed any offense under the Digital Security Act. When asked, Police Officer Mujibur Rahman stated that Shawon Roy was arrested for his own safety due to public outrage. The Superintendent of Police for Dinajpur district commented that a case under the Security Act is inevitable for this type of offense. When asked if a case had been filed at the police station for the assault on Shree Shawon Roy, the Superintendent said that filing such a case would further provoke the extremists.
The Bangladesh Minority Watch has strongly condemned the human rights violations and is demanding the immediate arrest and legal punishment of the culprits who assaulted the victim and paraded him with a garland of shoes. They also demand the release of the innocent Shawon Roy.
