DHAKA: Bangladesh Minority Watch (BDMW), a human rights organization working for minority rights, has strongly condemned the inhumane torture of Shamoli Haldar Rupa and her son, Diganta Haldar, during a three-day interrogation at the Dhaka District North DB office from September 6 to September 9.
Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, President of Bangladesh Minority Watch, visited the victim’s family on Friday afternoon in the Barbaria Majhipara area of Dhamrai Upazila, Dhaka. During the visit, he demanded judicial action against the police officers involved in the incident.
Speaking to The Daily Star, he stated:
"Our country's existing laws and police regulations clearly outline how a law enforcement agency should interrogate suspects during an investigation, how long they can be detained, and the proper procedure for questioning. However, the police officers involved followed none of these protocols in this case."
"Holding a woman for three days and beating her is heinous. Furthermore, to force a confession, her school-going teenage son was handcuffed and hung while being beaten in front of his mother. This is utterly inhumane; the police cannot do this. Another accused in the case, Kirtan, was also held for three days and subjected to barbaric torture, being moved from the Dhaka District North DB office to the South office for further abuse. This is a total violation of human rights," added Rabindra Ghosh.
He further stated that the organization strongly condemns these actions and demands that every officer involved be brought under a judicial inquiry to ensure strict punishment. He also mentioned that Minority Watch would soon file a case in court against the concerned DB officials on behalf of the victim's family.
Local residents reported that the area had been virtually "men-less" for the past month due to the fear of DB police. There is widespread public anger regarding the incident, with locals demanding justice against the officers.
Iman Ali, a local UP member present at the scene, said:
"Due to the atrocities of the DB, no man in this area could sleep peacefully for an entire month. They created such a state of terror. We strongly condemn this incident and demand accountability."
