An incident of assault and arson occurred in the Goona village of Shyamnagar, Satkhira, targeting Supad Mondal and his relatives.
According to Adv. Rabindra Ghosh, president of the Bangladesh Minority Watch, on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at approximately 4:30 PM, Supad Mondal and his family were brutally assaulted and left with bloody injuries. Later that night, their cowshed was set on fire.
The attack injured two brothers, their wives, a brother-in-law, and a sister.
According to the case statement, on Sunday at about 4:30 PM, a group of assailants armed with local weapons launched a coordinated attack on Supad Mondal, his brother, their wives, brother-in-law, and sister. When the family tried to resist, they were brutally struck with iron rods and crowbars, resulting in bloody, bone-breaking injuries. Hearing their screams, neighbors rushed to the scene, causing the perpetrators to flee. The locals rescued the injured and admitted them to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Taking advantage of the family's absence while they were hospitalized, the culprits set fire to their thatched cowshed late that night. The cowshed was completely destroyed. The fire was spreading towards their home when locals arrived and managed to extinguish it.
The injured are:
* Supad Mondal (son of Yudhisthir)
* Sripad Mondal (30, son of Yudhisthir)
* Kabita Rani Mondal (40, daughter of Yudhisthir)
* Bhushon Mondal (55, brother-in-law)
* Deepika Rani (28, wife of Supad Mondal)
* Smriti Rani (wife of Sripad Mondal)
On April 26, 2023, Supad Mondal filed a case (Case No. 38) at the Shyamnagar Police Station against six named individuals and 5-6 unnamed suspects.
The accused are from the same village:
* Matiar Rahman (45, son of the late Babu Chowkidar)
* Md. Abdul Bari Chowkidar (55, son of the late Jumman Ali Chowkidar)
* Md. Nazrul Islam (38, son of the late Hazrat Ali Chowkidar)
* Md. Hamid Chowkidar (40, son of Jahed Chowkidar)
* Rashidul Chowkidar (35, son of Jahed Chowkidar)
* Abdur Rahman (22, son of Md. Matiar Chowkidar)
Along with 5-6 other unnamed individuals.
Prior to this incident, the same accused had severely beaten Supad Mondal's brother, Sripad Mondal, and his wife, Smriti Rani Mondal. On April 17, 2023, Sripad Mondal filed a case (Case No. 22) against seven individuals, two of whom were arrested and sent to jail by the police.
After Sripad Mondal filed the case, the other defendants began threatening him with death, demanding that he withdraw the case. In response, Sripad Mondal's brother, Sri Krishnapad Mondal, filed a General Diary entry (No. 116) at the Shyamnagar Police Station on April 18, 2023.
Meanwhile, on April 25, 2023, the third accused in Case No. 38, Md. Nazrul Islam, filed a counter-case (Case No. 35) against five of the victims and 3-4 unnamed individuals at the Shyamnagar Police Station.
The dates of the two incidents are the same, with only an hour's difference.
* The incident in Case No. 35 occurred at 5:30 PM.
* The incident in Case No. 38 occurred at 4:30 PM.
When the president of Bangladesh Minority Watch, Adv. Rabindra Ghosh, inquired about the incident with the Satkhira Superintendent of Police, he was informed that two of the accused had been arrested and sent to jail. The Superintendent assured that appropriate legal action would be taken following a proper investigation.
The BDM Watch president strongly condemned the incident and demanded a fair investigation and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
