Suicide of a Student in Jhikargacha Following Torture

 
 
 


A school student in Mistripara, Jhikargacha, Jashore, reportedly committed suicide after being physically assaulted and tortured by three young men

According to Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, president of Bangladesh Minority Watch, an Aniroy, a 12-year-old Hindu school student, committed suicide at her home on March 17, 2023, at approximately 10:20 AM, after being assaulted and tortured by the accused

Details of the Incident

Aniroy was a seventh-grade student at Jhikargacha Badruddin Muslim (BM) High School. After finishing her coaching session, as she was heading home, she was allegedly taken to a school room by three young men—Mehedi Hasan Tamim, Sakib Uddin, and two other unidentified individuals. They physically assaulted her inside the room. Her brother, Arghya Roy, has video footage of her limping out of the room after the assault. Overwhelmed by shame and humiliation, Aniroy went home, locked the door, and took her own life by hanging herself.
The deceased was the only daughter of Gautam Roy, an expatriate living in Kuwait

Legal and Public Response

Advocate Rabindra Ghosh stated that upon being informed, Jhikargacha Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Sumon Kumar, initially recorded a general diary. Subsequently, the student's mother, Konika Roy, filed a case. The police arrested one of the accused and sent him to jail through the court. A case (No. 24) was officially filed on March 29, 2023, under Sections 9(a) and 30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

 * Two or three other unidentified individuals.
In protest of the incident and demanding justice, villagers and fellow students blocked the Jashore-Benapole highway with the student's body at the Upazila intersection around 3 PM.

Bangladesh Minority Watch has demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of all those directly involved in this tragic death, as well as compensation for the victim's family.
