A delegation from the Bangladesh Minority Watch (BDM W) met with the Deputy Commissioner of Thakurgaon district and conducted an on-site investigation in various areas.
On Thursday, May 18, 2023, at approximately 11:15 AM, a delegation led by Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, the president of Bangladesh Minority Watch, met and exchanged views with the Deputy Commissioner at his office in Thakurgaon. During the meeting, they brought various local issues to his attention, and he assured them of legal assistance. They later met with the Additional Superintendent of Police, Ms. Liza Akhter, who also provided legal support for the issues raised.
Subsequently, the human rights delegation, accompanied by the administration, visited the site at around 2:15 PM on the same day. The investigation revealed that according to the SA record, the Hindus' cremation ground in the village of Laututi, Bhulli police station, Thakurgaon district, comprises two plots: SA Khatian No. 709, Dag No. 903 (80 decimals) and Dag No. 2968 (53 decimals), totaling 133 decimals of land meant for public use by the Hindu community.
However, some unscrupulous individuals—1. Md. Zainal Abedin, 2. Md. Salam, and 3. Md. Abu Sama (sons of the late Toaz Sheikh); 4. Md. Kuddus Ali and 5. Md. Hossain Ali (sons of the late Rasul Sheikh); and 6. Md. Soleman Dey (son of the late Sobhan)—had been forcibly occupying the land. When asked to produce legal documents for their possession, they were unable to provide any. As a result, they agreed to vacate the land, stating, "We will no longer go to this land from today. They can take possession of the land. We will never go to that land again." The land was then returned to the Hindu community for use as a cremation ground.
The local residents have highly praised the administration and the BDM W delegation for their role in recovering the Hindu community's cremation ground land.
Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, the president of BDM W, strongly condemned this act of coercion and expressed hope that such incidents will not be repeated.
