It has been reported that on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, incidents of idol vandalism occurred at three temples in Atkhali village of Dakua Union in Galachipa, Patuakhali.
On the said date, at approximately 1:00 PM in Atkhali village, an individual entered the Anandamayi Kalibari Sarbajanin Durga Mandir and vandalized the idols. Later, at around 2:30 PM, the same individual vandalized an idol placed on the roof of the drawing-room of Shipon Doctor's house in the same village. Subsequently, at about 4:30 PM, the individual entered the Manasa temple at the Nandi residence in the village and vandalized the idol of the goddess Manasa. It is understood that the same person committed all three acts.
In connection with these incidents, Rabindra Narayan Nandi, a resident of Atkhali village, has filed a case at the Galachipa Police Station, naming one individual as the accused.
The accused is Md. Russell (30), son of the late Hakim Ali of Fukhali village in the same upazila.
Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, President of Bangladesh Minority Watch, stated that when he inquired about the incident with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Galachipa Police Station, Shonit Kumar Gayen, the OC confirmed the events. He stated that Russell has been arrested, and based on his confession, a case has been filed for the crime of idol vandalism, and he has been sent to court.
However, locals have initially suggested that Russell is mentally unstable. The matter is being investigated with due importance.
The president of BDM (Bangladesh Minority Watch) strongly condemned such continuous acts of religious violence and said, "It is being observed that despite demands for justice in thousands of cases, including the vandalism of Hindu deities' idols in Bangladesh, the accused are getting away due to a lack of justice, meaning impunity for perpetrators is an indulgence to repeat crimes against religion." He added, "This kind of vengeance must stop. Such malicious, discriminatory, and step-motherly treatment is very detrimental to co-existence and highly condemnable."
