Vegetable Vendor Stabbed to Death in Sylhet's Dhopadighirpar Area

 
 
 
 
Sylhet: Miscreants fatally stabbed a vegetable vendor in the Dhopadighirpar area of Sylhet city in the early hours of June 1, 2023. The incident took place around 5:20 AM on the paved road in front of the Syed Chand Ahmed Chishtia Mazar at Dhopadighir East Par, under the jurisdiction of the Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station.

The victim was identified as Gobinda Das, 35, son of the late Gouranga Das from Borgaon village in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj district.
According to Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, President of Bangladesh Minority Watch, who cited the case details, Gobinda Das lived with his family in a rented house belonging to Rangku Das in the Akhaliya Notun Bazar area of Jalalabad upazila. He supported his family by selling vegetables from a van.

On the morning of the incident, as he was heading to the Sobhanighat wholesale vegetable market on his van, he was ambushed by assailants in front of the Chishtia Mazar. They stabbed him with a sharp knife, causing severe bleeding injuries. As he fell to the ground, the attackers snatched ৳7,000 from him and fled the scene.
Passersby found the critically injured Gobinda Das and rushed him to Sylhet's M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital. He was admitted for treatment but succumbed to his injuries at 8:30 AM.
The victim's elder brother, Janardhan Sarkar, 51, filed a murder case against unidentified assailants at the Kotwali Police Station on the same day (Case No. 2).

Within 12 hours of the incident, police identified and arrested three individuals in connection with the murder. The details were shared in a press briefing on Thursday night by SMP Commissioner Md. Elias Sharif, BPM (Bar).
In a significant development, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the alleged mastermind of the murder, Hridoy Ahmed Circuit, 19. He was apprehended in the early hours of Sunday, June 5, 2023, during a raid near Gosainpur Government Primary School in Gowainghat upazila. The arrestee, Hridoy, is the son of Rafiq Mia from the Shibbari Sadipur area of the city.

In a press release, Senior ASP Afsan-Al-Alam, Media Officer of RAB-9, stated that through a shadow investigation and the use of technology, they were able to locate and arrest the key suspect in this sensational murder case. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Kotwali Police Station.

The President of Bangladesh Minority Watch has strongly condemned the brutal incident and demanded a fair investigation to bring all the culprits to justice and ensure they face exemplary punishment.
