Bangladesh Minority Watch Demands Swift Arrest of Accused in Murder of Radhaballav Biswas (75) in Narail

On Wednesday, August 16, a land dispute over jute harvesting in the Hindu-dominated village of Debbhog, Sheikhati Union, Narail Sadar Upazila, led to a clash between two groups. Radhaballav Biswas (75), the landowner, was killed, and several others were seriously injured and are currently being treated in the hospital.
When contacted by phone, Shriman Sufal Biswas, the nephew of the deceased Radhaballav Biswas, stated that the conflict originated from the harvesting of jute on their land. Radhaballav Biswas of Debbhog village had a long-standing dispute with Salam Sheikh of Bahirgram village over the plot of land in the village's marshy area where Radhaballav had planted jute.

At around 12:30 PM, Salam Sheikh arrived with a group of people and began cutting the jute with sickles. Radhaballav Biswas, along with his brother Durlabh Biswas and their nephews Sufal Biswas and Ramapada Biswas, went to stop them, leading to a clash between the two groups. During the scuffle, Radhaballav Biswas was seriously injured by a sickle blow from the opposition. At least 11 people from both sides were injured by sticks and sickles.

Narail District Superintendent of Police (SP), Sadira Khatun, confirmed by phone that Shriman Sufal Biswas, the nephew of the deceased Radhaballav Biswas, had filed a case at the Sadar Police Station, naming 18 individuals as defendants. Later, Narail Sadar Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC), Obaidul Quader, stated that four of the accused have already been apprehended, and a police operation is ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects.
